# How to Stop Living Inside Your Own Head

July 18, 2026

![Man releasing sparkling dust from an open birdcage on a cliff overlooking a valley.](https://rxvhnvwmfwrneowddnji.supabase.co/storage/v1/render/image/public/blog-images/feeling-trapped-how-to-stop-living-inside-your-head-o76oqf.png?width=1200&resize=contain&quality=80)

You’re chopping vegetables for dinner, but you aren’t really there. Instead, you’re back in that meeting from three hours ago, re-running what you said. Or maybe what you \*should\* have said. The knife moves on autopilot while your mind is miles away, stuck in a loop.

Later, someone asks you about your day and you give a vague answer. Not because you don’t want to connect, but because you’ve spent so much of it caught up in your own internal monologue that the actual events feel distant and fuzzy.

This is what it means to be living inside your own head. It’s a place where you are the main character, the narrator, and the critic, all at once. And honestly, it can be an incredibly lonely and tiring place to be.

### The Mind’s Problem-Solving Overdrive

Our brains are fantastic at solving problems. It’s what they’re designed to do. But sometimes, that problem-solving function goes into overdrive, especially when we’re dealing with anxiety or low mood. It starts trying to “solve” things that can’t be solved – like the past, or what someone else might be thinking.

You might find yourself analysing every tiny detail, as if finding the perfect explanation will finally let you relax. This is something I see so often with clients seeking help for anxiety. It’s a mental hamster wheel that feels productive but just leaves you drained. It’s a classic example of how trying to control everything makes anxiety worse.

The result? You end up feeling stuck, even when life looks fine from the outside. You’re physically present, but your mind is elsewhere, and that constant mental churn is exhausting.

### CBT: Noticing the Patterns

So, what can we do about it? This is where an approach like [Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)](https://cbtandcounsellingsurrey.co.uk/blog/cbt-therapy-counselling-surrey) can be incredibly useful. CBT isn’t about just ignoring your thoughts. It’s about understanding the link between what you think, how you feel, and what you do.

It helps you to step back and notice the thought patterns you’re caught in. For example, you might notice a habit of ‘catastrophising’ – jumping to the worst possible conclusion. Or perhaps you’re constantly replaying conversations, a pattern that often leaves you awake at 2am.

Cognitive therapy helps you see these thoughts for what they are: mental events, not facts. Just because you have a thought, doesn’t make it true or important. Learning to separate yourself from your thoughts is the first step toward getting out of your head.

### Practical Ways to Get Out of Your Head

While therapy provides a structured way to work on these patterns, there are small things you can start doing right now to break the cycle.

**1\. Get into Your Senses**
When you feel yourself drifting off into a spiral of thought, bring yourself back to the physical world. Pause and name:
• Five things you can see.
• Four things you can physically feel (the chair beneath you, your feet on the floor).
• Three things you can hear.
• Two things you can smell.
• One thing you can taste.
This simple mindfulness-based CBT technique interrupts the thought loop and grounds you in the present.

**2\. Give the Thought a Name**
When a persistent worry pops up, try labelling it. For instance, “Ah, there’s the ‘I’m going to get it wrong’ thought again.” Or, “This is my ‘what-if’ story.” By naming it, you create a little bit of distance. It’s not \*you\*, it’s just a familiar old thought pattern passing through.

**3\. Change Your Physical State**
Overthinking is a very static activity. A powerful way to disrupt it is to move your body. You don’t need to go for a five-mile run. Just stand up, stretch, walk into another room, or do a few simple chores. The physical shift can often create a mental one too.

**4\. Externalise It**
Thoughts have much more power when they just rattle around inside your skull. Get them out. Write them down in a notebook, or speak them out loud to an empty room. This stops them from being an abstract source of dread and turns them into something concrete that you can look at more objectively.

### When You Need More Than Self-Help

Sometimes, these patterns are just too ingrained to tackle on your own. You might find that saying yes to everything leaves you feeling exhausted and with even more to worry about. Or perhaps the thoughts are linked to deeper issues of low self-esteem, grief, or past events.

This is when talking to a professional can be so valuable. In counselling, you have a dedicated space to unpack these thoughts without judgement. A good therapist won’t just listen; they’ll help you spot the cycles you’re stuck in.
