# Living With a Quiet Critic

August 6, 2026

![An open journal with scribbled pages, spectacles, and a lit candle on a dusty table.](https://rxvhnvwmfwrneowddnji.supabase.co/storage/v1/render/image/public/blog-images/living-quiet-critic-v1ef7h.png?width=1200&resize=contain&quality=80)

## That Quiet Voice That Questions Everything

It’s just a simple email to a colleague. So why have you rewritten the opening sentence six times? You read it aloud. Too formal. Too friendly. Too much. You delete it and start again, a familiar knot tightening in your stomach. It’s just an email, you tell yourself. But the feeling is real.

Or perhaps you’ve just received some praise at work. For a moment, you feel a flicker of pride. Then, almost immediately, another voice chimes in. _‘They’re just being nice.’ ‘It wasn’t that good.’ ‘Now they’ll expect more and I’ll definitely disappoint them.’_ The good feeling vanishes, replaced by a quiet dread.

This is what it’s like to live with a quiet critic. It’s a persistent, internal commentator who seems dedicated to pointing out your flaws, second-guessing your decisions, and downplaying your achievements. It’s exhausting.

## The Gap Between How Life Looks and How It Feels

From the outside, things might look perfectly fine. You might have a good job, a nice home somewhere in Surrey, and people who care about you. You’re functioning. But inside, it's a completely different story. That feeling that you’re just about holding it together can create a background hum of [anxiety](https://cbtandcounsellingsurrey.co.uk/problems/anxiety).

I’ve seen this countless times in my work with clients. People who are outwardly successful but inwardly feel like a fraud, waiting to be found out. This disconnect is incredibly isolating. It can feel impossible to explain to others why you feel so bad when your life looks so good. It’s the very definition of [when ‘good enough’ feels like failing](https://cbtandcounsellingsurrey.co.uk/blog/good-enough-feels-like-failing).

This feeling isn't a personal failing; it's the signature of [low self-esteem](https://cbtandcounsellingsurrey.co.uk/problems/low-self-esteem). It’s a pattern of thinking that has likely been there for a very long time, whispering away in the background.

### How Low Self-Esteem Shows Up Day-to-Day

Low self-worth isn’t always loud or dramatic. More often, it's a series of small, quiet moments that chip away at your confidence. Does any of this sound familiar?

- **Endlessly replaying conversations:** Going over and over something you said, convinced you sounded foolish or said the wrong thing.
- **Avoiding challenges:** Turning down opportunities at work or in your social life because the fear of failure feels too overwhelming.
- **Struggling with decisions:** Feeling paralysed by even small choices, worried you’ll make the ‘wrong’ one.
- **Seeking constant reassurance:** Asking others if you’re doing a good job or if they’re upset with you, needing external validation to feel okay.
- **Comparing yourself to others:** Scrolling through social media or looking at colleagues and only seeing how you fall short.

Each one of these acts as reinforcement for the quiet critic, giving it more evidence to support its negative view of you.

## Challenging the Critic Is Not About 'Being More Positive'

Many people I speak to have already tried to fight back. They’ve read the books. They’ve tried telling themselves positive affirmations in the mirror. Sometimes it helps for a little while, but sooner or later, the critic’s voice returns, often louder than before.

This is because just 'thinking positively' is like painting over a damp patch on the wall. It looks better for a short time, but you haven’t addressed the source of the problem. True change isn't about ignoring the critic, but about understanding it.

The process of building self-worth involves learning to notice this voice without automatically believing what it says. It’s about creating a small space between the critical thought and your reaction to it. That space is where you can start to make a different choice.

## How Counselling for Low Self-Esteem Can Help

This is where professional support can be so valuable. Seeking **[counselling for low self esteem](https://cbtandcounsellingsurrey.co.uk/problems/low-self-esteem)** isn't an admission of defeat. It's a practical step towards understanding your own mind and learning new skills to manage it.

In our sessions, we don’t just talk about feeling better. We look at the specific thought patterns that keep you stuck. Using approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), we can learn to identify the automatic negative thoughts that your inner critic thrives on. We can then gently question them and explore alternative, more balanced perspectives.

What I've noticed is that for many people struggling with **[low self esteem in Surrey](https://cbtandcounsellingsurrey.co.uk/problems/low-self-esteem)**, just having a neutral space to voice these thoughts without judgement is a huge relief. It helps you see that these are just thoughts, not facts. For some, it can feel like the first step in quietening that constant hum of anxiety that has been present for years.

The goal isn't to eliminate the critic entirely (that’s not realistic), but to change your relationship with it. You learn to turn the volume down and listen to a kinder, more compassionate voice instead. It’s a process to **build confidence** that lasts, because it’s built from the inside out.

## Ready to Start a Different Conversation?

If you recognise yourself in these words, please know that things can be different. You don’t have to keep struggling with that quiet critic alone. The cycle of self-doubt and criticism can be broken.

We offer practical and supportive **[counselling in Surrey](https://cbtandcounsellingsurrey.co.uk/cbt-counselling/guildford)**, both online and face-to-face from our locations including in Guildford and Woking. Our fee is £68 for a full hour session, and we work on a session-by-session basis, so you are always in control. There's no long-term commitment required.

If you're ready to take the first step, please get in touch to book an initial session. We’re here to help you find a way to feel more at ease with yourself and build a genuine sense of self-worth.
