# When Anxiety Feels Like Your Default Setting

September 10, 2026

![Ivy-covered stone knight statue overlooking a village with a church tower on a cloudy day.](https://rxvhnvwmfwrneowddnji.supabase.co/storage/v1/render/image/public/blog-images/overcoming-anxiety-in-guildford-zm3x5y.png?width=1200&resize=contain&quality=80)

## That Familiar, Unwelcome Feeling

It can start so quietly you barely notice. Maybe it’s a tightness in your chest while you’re waiting for a coffee in Guildford, or a sudden, looping thought about a work email as you walk the dog. On the surface, everything is fine. But underneath, there’s a [hum of unease](https://cbtandcounsellingsurrey.co.uk/blog/constant-hum-anxiety), a feeling that something is about to go wrong.

You find yourself mentally rehearsing conversations, second-guessing decisions, and scanning the future for potential disasters. Exhausting, isn’t it? Many people I speak to describe it as living with a smoke alarm that’s become too sensitive – it goes off for the slightest thing, leaving you in a [constant state of alert](https://cbtandcounsellingsurrey.co.uk/blog/always-edge-anxiety-cant-explain).

## How Everyday Worries Become Deep-Rooted

Anxiety isn’t just about big, obvious fears. More often, it’s the accumulation of small, unresolved worries that creates that deep-rooted feeling. A worry about a bill, a comment from a colleague, a news headline – they all get tangled together. Your brain, trying to be helpful, gets stuck in a pattern of threat-spotting.

Soon, this state of high alert starts to feel normal. You might become brilliant at managing your diary and organising your family, but the effort leaves you drained. It’s a classic sign of high-functioning anxiety, where you appear to be coping perfectly but internally you’re paddling furiously just to stay afloat. For some, it can feel like you’re just going through the motions, disconnected from your own life even in busy places like Woking or Epsom.

### Breaking the Cycle: Where Do You Start?

When you feel overwhelmed, the idea of ‘fixing’ your anxiety can seem impossible. The goal isn’t to eliminate worry entirely (that’s not how our brains work), but to change your relationship with it. It’s about learning to turn the volume down.

Here are a few starting points that I’ve seen make a real difference for people:

- **Externalise the 'What Ifs':** Anxious thoughts love to swirl vaguely inside our heads. Grab a pen and paper and write them down, no matter how silly they seem. Seeing “What if I mess up the presentation?” written down makes it a concrete problem, not a shapeless monster. It loses some of its power when it’s out of your head and on a page.
- **Create a 'Worry Window':** This might sound strange, but actively scheduling time to worry can be incredibly effective for [anxiety management in Surrey](https://cbtandcounsellingsurrey.co.uk/stress-counselling-surrey). Set a timer for 10 minutes. In that time, let yourself think about all the things causing you anxiety. When the timer goes off, you consciously postpone any further worrying until the next day’s window. It acknowledges the thoughts without letting them hijack your entire day.
- **Find Your Feet:** When your mind is racing, bring your attention to your body. Wherever you are in Surrey, stand still for a moment and focus entirely on the feeling of your feet on the ground. Notice the pressure, the texture of your socks, the temperature. This simple act of grounding can interrupt the mental spiral and bring you back to the present.

## When You Need More Than Self-Help

Sometimes, these strategies provide enough relief. But if your anxiety is persistent, affecting your sleep, your relationships, or your ability to enjoy life, it might be time to [seek support](https://cbtandcounsellingsurrey.co.uk/blog/how-to-start-counselling). This isn’t a sign of failure; it’s a sign of strength. It’s recognising that when ‘fine’ isn’t good enough anymore, you deserve to feel better.

This is often where techniques like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) come in. Working with a therapist provides a structured way to understand the specific thought patterns and behaviours that are keeping you stuck. It’s not just about talking; it’s about building a practical, personal toolkit for managing anxious thoughts and feelings as they arise.

If you’ve found yourself constantly [putting everyone else first](https://cbtandcounsellingsurrey.co.uk/blog/when-you-always-put-others-first), a therapist can help you explore why, and find ways to prioritise your own emotional wellbeing without the guilt. For anyone wanting to understand more, we’ve written about what to know before looking for [CBT in Guildford](https://cbtandcounsellingsurrey.co.uk/blog/finding-cbt-in-guildford), which can be a helpful read.

### How We Can Help in Surrey

We work with individuals across Guildford and the whole of Surrey, both online and face-to-face, to help them understand and manage their anxiety. We’ll work together to map out what’s happening for you and develop practical strategies to help you feel more in control.

Our sessions are booked one at a time, so you’re always in control and there’s no long-term commitment. Our fee is £68 for a full hour session. If you’re ready to take the next step towards overcoming anxiety in Guildford, please get in touch to book an initial session.
