CBT & Counselling Cobham

Hello, I’m Shireen and I’m a fully qualified and experienced Psychotherapist and Counsellor based at CBT and Counselling Cobham. I offer individual therapy for adults, with a special focus on supporting individuals facing challenges in their personal relationships. My approach provides a warm, confidential, and non-judgemental space where we can work together to help you feel more at ease with yourself and your intentions.

With a Postgraduate Certificate in Existential Therapy and a Diploma in Psychodynamic Therapy, I draw on a range of techniques to offer a personalised approach that meets your unique needs.

Life can be overwhelming, and it’s easy to feel lost or uncertain. These feelings can leave you questioning your sense of purpose and happiness. The good news is, change is possible. Together, we’ll turn those feelings of uncertainty into a sense of clarity and confidence, helping you feel more at home in your own life.

My approach is always tailored to you as an individual. We’ll set meaningful goals together and review them along the way, making sure they continue to challenge and support your personal growth.

If you’re ready to take that first step, I’m here to guide and support you.

My approach to therapy

As an Integrated Existential Therapist, I believe everyone has the right to feel comfortable and at ease in the world. Our sessions will focus on discovering what this means for you personally. Together, we’ll explore the hidden messages within your anxieties and understand how they came to be. If you are happy to, we will  also look at past experiences and current events to understand how they continue to influence you today.

This process will help you develop a deeper sense of self-awareness and a renewed sense of confidence. By reconnecting with yourself in this way, you’ll be better equipped to approach life with clarity, strength, and self-assurance.

I also use powerful Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques to help you examine how your thoughts and feelings shape your experiences. Through this process, you’ll gain the tools to think and respond in ways that feel authentic and aligned with your personal values.

My aim is to help you build a stronger, more resilient sense of self. This transformation allows you to approach life’s challenges and personal relationships with ease and emotional freedom. By reducing emotional stress and unhelpful thinking patterns, you can move forward with confidence and a deeper connection to yourself.

Ethical Standards

My priority in therapy is to create a space where you feel safe, comfortable, and fully supported. As a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), I strictly adhere to their ethical framework, ensuring professionalism, confidentiality, and respect in every session.

I understand that some people may have had negative past experiences with therapy. I work sensitively to validate your experiences and build a relationship founded on trust and understanding.

To maintain the highest standards of care, I commit to ongoing professional development, completing at least 30 hours of training each year. I also engage in regular supervision, which allows me to reflect on my practice and continue growing as a therapist. This commitment ensures you receive the most effective and thoughtful support possible.

Qualifications

  •  PG Certificate in Existential Psychotherapy and Counselling (New School of Existential Therapy) North London
  • Level 4 Diploma in Integrative Psychodynamic and Existential Counselling Therapy (Kingston College)

Background and Experience

During my career I have worked with political parties and the Palace of Westminster in a sales capacity. It may seem a strange place to hone your skills as a compassionate human being but to the contrary it is an exceptional place as it demands that you understand the needs of people everywhere.

In contrast, I’ve also worked alongside advertising agencies and trade unions, experiences that deepened my appreciation for the power of nurturing relationships. Over time, I recognised my passion for supporting others on a deeper, more personal level. This realisation inspired me to leave my career behind and pursue professional training in Psychotherapy and Counselling.

My varied background enables me to approach therapy with empathy, insight, and a well-rounded perspective on human behaviour. It’s this experience that informs my work as a counsellor today.

How I Can Help You

I offer a supportive, empowering space where you can overcome challenges and build confidence. Here’s how I can help:

  • A Warm and Compassionate Approach
Previous clients described me as patient, kindly spoken, and easy to talk to. I create a safe, non-judgemental space where you will feel comfortable enough  to explore your thoughts and feelings.

Cobham Practice

CBT and Counselling Cobham

Hello and welcome! My name is Ellen and I’m a fully qualified and experienced integrative therapist for both individual and couples based at CBT and Counselling Cobham. I have a Diploma in Narrative Therapy and a Post Graduate Diploma in Relationship Therapy. I am also a registered member of the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) so therefore adhere to their ethical guidelines.

My training was ‘integrative’ which means that I studied various models of counselling. This enables me to draw upon many different therapeutic approaches in order to meet your unique needs. I work in a confidential,  sensitive way in an environment that is warm, relaxed, non-judgemental and fully supportive.

Narrative Therapy, sees you as  the expert on your own life, with your challenges viewed as separate from who you are. This approach helps you understand how your issues affect your life, providing a fresh, outside perspective. It’s a respectful, non-blaming style of therapy that recognises how you make sense of life through your relationships and personal stories.

I see problems as responses to life’s challenges, not as part of who you are—you are not the problem! Together, we’ll identify the changes you want to make and how to achieve them. I’ll actively listen, engage fully, and offer helpful tools as needed, participating in our conversations rather than sitting passively.

I have extensive experience helping people with anxiety, depression, self-esteem challenges, relationship issues, trauma recovery and more. People who have consulted with me have  told me they feel at ease, comfortable and supported in our sessions and appreciate the insights they gain through counselling—insights that empower them to make meaningful, positive changes in their lives and relationships.

Qualifications

  • Post Graduate Diploma in Relationship Therapy (University of Hull)
  • Diploma in Narrative Therapy (Distinction, Open College)
  • Post Graduate Certificate in Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Well-Being (Merit, Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust)
  • Certificate of Qualification as Relate Counsellor (Relate Institute)

Background/experience

I am originally from Seattle, Washington, USA and have lived in London and Surrey for over 40 years. I began my counselling career working with families and couples as well as individuals, providing me with invaluable insights into relationships.

Prior to becoming a Counsellor, I worked in the City where I gained extensive knowledge and experience of relationships in the workplace and the pressures and stresses of working in business. I was a Counsellor for Relate from 2008-13 and in private practice since 2013. I am the mother of adult twin daughters.

How I can help you

Respectful Listening and Active Support. I will listen to your stories and hopes with respect, compassion, and without judgement. Rather than simply being a sounding board, I will take an active role, offering insights, observations, and practical tools to help you achieve meaningful change.

Flexible pacing – I will work with you and at your pace. We will talk about what is important for you to talk about, rather than me setting the agenda.

Collaborative and Adaptive Approach – I take a collaborative approach, regularly checking ensuring that our work together is on track for what you wish to achieve.. Often, the focus of the work changes and evolves over the course of counselling and I will check with you that things are moving in directions that you’re finding helpful.

Flexible to Fit Your Schedule – I will be flexible in accommodating your schedule and lifestyle. Therefore, offering sessions at convenient times and adjusting frequency as needed. I will accommodate your individual requirements for the counselling process based on what is helpful for you.

Understanding Problems with Empathy – I see challenges as the result of complex factors outside of ourselves that we are trying to navigate, not personal failings. This approach allows us to explore solutions with empathy and perspective.
