When 'Fine' is a Lie: Coping with Burnout

When 'Fine' is a Lie: Coping with Burnout

Is This Really 'Just a Phase'?

It starts quietly. A little more tiredness than usual. A slightly shorter fuse when someone asks you a question at the end of a long day. You put it down to a busy week, not enough sleep, or just one of those things. Life in Surrey can be demanding, after all.

But then the quiet signs get a little louder. That Sunday evening dread becomes a permanent knot in your stomach. Your motivation, once easy to find, feels buried under a mountain of to-do lists. You find yourself feeling detached, cynical even, about things you used to care about. On the outside, you’re still functioning. You’re getting to work, managing the household, meeting deadlines. But inside, it feels like you're wading through treacle.

Many of the people I speak to describe this feeling perfectly. They say things like, “I should be happy, but I just feel… nothing.” Or, “I’m so tired of being tired.” This isn’t just a bad mood. It’s the slow creep of exhaustion, and trying to ignore it often just makes it worse. It’s a classic case of when ‘just getting on with it’ isn’t working anymore.

    The Sneaky Symptoms of Burnout

Burnout isn’t a sudden event. It’s a gradual erosion of your energy, enthusiasm, and confidence. It’s more than just stress. Stress involves a sense of urgency and hyperactivity, but burnout is about feeling empty, devoid of motivation, and beyond caring.

Some of the burnout symptoms we see in our Surrey clinic include:

    • Emotional Exhaustion: Feeling drained and unable to cope with the demands of your day.
    • Cynicism and Detachment: A loss of enjoyment and a sense of disconnection from your work and life in general.
    • Reduced Performance: Finding it hard to concentrate, being less productive, and lacking creativity.

You might also notice physical symptoms, like headaches, sleepless nights, or feeling run down all the time. It can feel like you’re constantly battling a low-grade illness that never quite goes away. Some people find that when life is good, they still worry, which only adds to the sense of exhaustion.

    The Internal Pressure Cooker

So, why does this happen? Often, it’s driven by our own thoughts and beliefs. We live with a set of internal rules: “I must always be productive,” “I can’t let anyone down,” “I have to do this perfectly.” These high standards can be a powerful motivator, but they can also become a relentless inner critic.

When you believe you have to keep all the plates spinning flawlessly, you stop listening to your own needs. Rest feels lazy. Asking for help feels like failure. This internal monologue creates a constant state of pressure. It’s like trying to run a marathon at a sprinter’s pace – eventually, you're going to hit a wall.

And when ‘doing it all’ feels like too much, we often just push harder, believing that’s the only way through. But what if the solution isn't to push harder, but to think differently?

How CBT Offers a Practical Path Forward

This is where an approach like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be so effective. CBT isn’t about endlessly analysing your past. It’s a practical, present-focused therapy that gives you tools to manage your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours right now.

In a session, we would look at the specific thought patterns that are fuelling your burnout. For example, we might explore the 'all or nothing' thinking that tells you a project is a total failure if it isn’t perfect. Or we might challenge the belief that you are solely responsible for everyone’s happiness.

The goal of CBT counselling in Redhill is to help you build awareness of these unhelpful cycles. We work together to question them and develop more balanced, realistic ways of thinking. It's about learning effective stress management, not by eliminating stress, but by changing your relationship with it.

    Taking the First Small Step

You don't have to wait until you are at a complete breaking point to seek support. Recognising you're feeling overwhelmed is the first, and most important, step. Therapy provides a dedicated space to pause and untangle these feelings without judgment.

We can help you identify what needs to change and give you practical strategies to start reclaiming your energy and sense of self. It might involve setting better boundaries, learning to prioritise your own wellbeing, or simply finding a kinder inner voice. For so many, they find that when 'just be yourself' feels impossible, it’s a sign that the version of ‘self’ they are trying to be is simply unsustainable.

If you're in Redhill or the wider Surrey area and this resonates with you, please know that support is available. We offer confidential sessions both face-to-face and online. Our fee is £68 for a full hour session, and we work on a session-by-session basis, so there’s no pressure for any long-term commitment. You can simply book a session and see how it feels.

To find out more or to book an appointment, please get in touch with our team. Taking that first step can feel like the hardest part, but it’s a powerful move towards feeling more in control and less alone.
