Is It More Than 'Just a Phase'? Supporting Your Teen in Surrey

Is It More Than ‘Just a Phase’? Supporting Your Teen in Surrey

You know your child better than anyone. So you notice the small shifts. The bedroom door that’s closed more often than it’s open. The one-word answers at the dinner table. The spark that seems to have dimmed a little behind their eyes.

It’s a quiet, creeping worry. Is this just normal teenage angst? Or is it something more?

Being a young person in Surrey today is genuinely tough. There's immense pressure – from school, from social media, from the feeling that everyone else has their future perfectly mapped out. What looks like sullenness or laziness from the outside can so often be the visible sign of an internal battle with anxiety or low mood.

    The World They Live In

I've spoken with so many young people who feel a constant weight on their shoulders. They're scrolling through curated lives online and feeling like they don't measure up. They’re facing exam pressures in schools around Guildford and Woking that feel completely overwhelming. They're trying to figure out who they are in a world that feels more uncertain than ever.

As a parent, you see the fallout. The irritability that seems to come from nowhere. The sudden loss of interest in hobbies they once loved. The exhaustion that sleep doesn't seem to fix. And it’s natural to feel a bit lost yourself. Your instinct is to help, but pushing too hard can make them pull away even further. This is often the point where parents start thinking about finding some form of youth anxiety support.

That worry can become all-consuming. Many parents I speak to feel it’s like having a second, unpaid job, and it’s a burden you don’t have to carry by yourself. Sometimes a parent’s own wellbeing suffers when they are Putting Everyone Else First? What Happens When You’re Last on Your Own List.

What Can Psychological Therapy Actually Do?

When people hear ‘therapy’, they sometimes picture a very formal, clinical setting. But psychological therapy with young people in Surrey, as we practise it, is different. It’s about creating a space where they don’t have to perform or pretend. A space that belongs entirely to them.

It isn’t about us ‘fixing’ your child. It's about giving them the chance to be heard by someone outside the family ecosystem. Someone who isn’t a teacher or a friend, but a professional who can help them make sense of their thoughts and feelings.

We use approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to give them practical tools. We might explore how their thoughts are affecting their feelings, and how they can start to challenge the negative cycles that keep them stuck. It's collaborative and practical, not just endless talking. You can read more here if you are Thinking About Seeing a Therapist in Guildford?.

“But Will They Even Talk to a Stranger?”

This is probably the most common question we get from parents. And it’s a fair one. Many young people are initially hesitant or sceptical. That’s completely normal.

Our first job is simply to build a relationship. To show them we’re on their side. We find that once a young person realises this is a confidential space where they won’t be judged, they often begin to open up in ways that can surprise even themselves. The process of just starting is often the hardest part, as this article on How to Start Counselling When You Don't Know Where to Start explains.

We offer sessions both face-to-face across Surrey and online via Zoom, so they can choose the format that feels most comfortable for them. For some, talking via a screen feels less intimidating.

A Space for Them, Support for You

We believe in working transparently. While the content of the sessions is confidential (a crucial element for building trust), we can work with you to understand how best to support your child at home. It’s about creating a team around them.

Taking that first step can feel daunting, but you don’t have to have all the answers. Simply reaching out for a conversation is a positive move.

If what you've read here feels familiar, please get in touch. We offer confidential, session-by-session counselling for teenagers and young adults. Our fee is £68 for a full hour session, with no need for a long-term commitment. We’re here to answer any questions you might have and to help you find the right way forward for your family.
