Putting Everyone Else First? What Happens When You’re Last on Your Own List

Priorities list on paper pinned to a cork board, with most tasks checked off.

The Quiet Cost of Being the ‘Capable’ One

Your calendar is a masterpiece of organisation. Every appointment is logged, every school run accounted for, every deadline highlighted. From the outside, you’re the person who holds it all together for everyone else. You’re reliable, you’re capable, you’re the one people turn to.

But when the house is quiet, or during the drive to the office, a different feeling creeps in. A deep, bone-weary exhaustion that has little to do with sleep. It’s the feeling of being completely spent, with nothing left in the tank for yourself. You’ve met everyone’s needs but your own, and a quiet question echoes: ‘What about me?’

This pattern of putting others first rarely starts with a conscious decision. It begins with small, well-intentioned acts. Saying yes to a colleague when you’re already swamped. Sorting out a family problem on your one day off. It comes from a good place – a desire to be helpful, kind, and responsible.

    The Slow Burn of Self-Neglect

Over time, these small acts of self-sacrifice become a habit. Your own needs get pushed so far down the priority list they eventually fall off it completely. This isn't selfishness in reverse; it’s a form of self-neglect that can be hard to spot because it’s disguised as responsibility.

Maybe you’ve noticed it in small ways. You can’t remember the last time you read a book for pleasure. You laugh it off when friends ask what you do to relax. The idea of taking a whole hour for yourself feels laughably indulgent, maybe even selfish. That feeling of guilt is powerful, and often it’s the voice of a quiet critic inside that keeps you stuck in this cycle.

The result? A slow journey towards burnout. It’s more than just feeling tired. It’s a creeping resentment, a loss of joy in things you used to love, and a profound sense of feeling lost. When you spend all your energy tuned into others, you can lose connection with yourself.

It’s Not Selfish to Set Boundaries, It’s Necessary

The thought of changing this can be daunting. How do you start putting yourself first without feeling like you’re letting everyone down? This is where the idea of setting boundaries comes in. And it doesn’t have to be about confrontation or dramatic ultimatums.

Sometimes, a boundary is as simple as pausing before you say “yes”. It might be deciding not to answer work emails after 7 pm. It could be carving out 20 minutes to walk around the park in Woking on your lunch break, just for you. It’s about creating small pockets of time and space that are yours and yours alone.

In my experience, this is often the hardest step. The guilt can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re a parent used to being constantly on call. It can feel like you’re failing at your most important job, even when you know you're running on empty. This is a common feeling for many who are thinking about seeing a therapist.

How Woking Counselling Can Create Space for You

This is a pattern we see so often. Good people, worn down by giving too much. Counselling provides something that has probably been missing from your life for a very long time: an hour that is entirely, unapologetically about you.

It’s a space where you don’t have to take care of anyone. You can talk through the pressures you’re under without worrying about burdening someone. We can explore where this deep-seated need to please others comes from and challenge the thoughts that tell you it’s selfish to have your own needs.

Using approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), we can work together to identify the triggers for guilt and develop practical strategies for setting boundaries in a way that feels authentic to you. It’s not about becoming a different person; it’s about learning how to include yourself in the circle of care you so generously give to others.

If you're unsure how to start counselling when you don't know where to start, the first step is simply reaching out. We offer face-to-face sessions across Surrey as well as online appointments, booked one at a time with no long-term commitment. Our fee is £68 for a full hour session.

Taking this step is an acknowledgement that your wellbeing matters. Not just for your own sake, but for the people you care about too. After all, you can’t pour from an empty cup.
