When Worrying About Your Child Becomes Your Full-Time Job

When Worrying About Your Child Becomes Your Full-Time Job

It often starts with something small. A comment on the school run in Epsom that you brush off, but later replay in your mind. Or maybe it’s the quietness in the car on the way back from a party they were desperate to go to. You ask if they had fun, they say “yes”, but something in their voice makes you pause.

You start noticing patterns. The reluctance to try new things. The constant questions seeking reassurance. The sudden stomach aches before a maths test or a sleepover. And the worry for them starts to take up more and more space in your own head.

As a parent, you’re trying to manage everything. The logistics of life in Surrey, work, home, and now this persistent, nagging concern about your child’s emotional wellbeing. It's a unique kind of parenting stress, one that can easily contribute to the overwhelm of an ordinary life.

That Vague, Heavy Feeling of Worry

What I’ve found, speaking with parents from Woking to Guildford, is that this worry is often accompanied by a sense of isolation. You see other families who seem to be sailing through, and you start to question yourself. Am I doing enough? Am I doing too much? Am I making it worse?

The internet offers a million conflicting pieces of advice, and well-meaning friends might say “it’s just a phase”. But your gut tells you it’s more than that. You see your bright, lovely child struggling with big feelings they can’t name, and you feel powerless to help.

Sometimes, this constant low-level alertness can leave you feeling always on edge yourself. It’s exhausting trying to be the calm, capable parent when inside you’re grappling with your own anxieties about their future.

Giving Your Child a Toolkit, Not Just Reassurance

This is often where Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be so helpful, both for children and their parents. It’s not about digging into the distant past or labelling your child. At its heart, CBT is a set of practical, forward-looking tools.

It helps children understand the connection between their thoughts (what they’re telling themselves), their feelings (the tummy ache, the fast heartbeat), and their actions (avoiding the party, snapping at a sibling).

For example, a child who is anxious about school might have the thought, “No one will play with me at break time.” CBT helps them catch that thought. We can then gently look at it together. Is it 100% true? What happened yesterday? What’s a more balanced thought we could try instead? Like, “I feel worried no one will play with me, but I could ask Ben if he wants to play football.”

It’s a skill, like learning to ride a bike. It gives them a sense of control over their own minds, helping to quieten that constant hum of anxiety that might be holding them back.

What Does CBT for Children Actually Look Like?

It’s a fair question. It’s not about a child sitting in a formal chair being analysed. Sessions are often creative and age-appropriate. We might use drawing, worksheets, or storytelling to explain ideas. For a younger child, we might draw a ‘Thought Monster’ and learn how to shrink it. For a teenager, it might be more of a structured conversation, looking at unhelpful thinking patterns that sound a lot like a quiet critic.

The goal is to equip your child with their own personal toolkit for managing difficult emotions. It builds resilience and confidence that will serve them well beyond the specific worry they’re facing today. It’s about promoting positive children's mental health for the long term.

    A Practical Step Forward

Considering therapy for your child can feel like a big step, but it doesn’t have to be. It's simply about giving them access to support that is designed for them. It’s a proactive, loving choice that says, “I see you’re struggling, and we’re going to find a way through this together.”

If you're wondering how to start counselling when you don't know where to start, please know that a simple enquiry is often the most difficult part. We offer sessions both online and face-to-face across Surrey, booked one at a time with no long-term commitment. Our fee is £68 for a full hour session. It's a space for your child to be heard, and for you to feel supported.
